V Festival - Tent Collection
Each year in August a huge "pop music festival" is held at Weston Park which lies within our "patch" - this is known as the "V Festival" and draws thousands of young people for the weekend. Large camping grounds are provided.
In 2005 a young lady who attended noticed that a great many of the young people left their tents and other equipment behind when they left and found that these were simply disposed of as rubbish at the end of the event. The young lady's father is a member of Brewood and District Rotary Club so she asked "Can Rotary make use of this equipment rather than it be wasted? One of our members (Mike Hampson) contacted the organisers and in 2006 a small group of Rotarians from our club went and collected tents and equipment at the end of the festival. The amount of equipment left was far more than they could cope with but what was collected went to the International Aid Trust for use anywhere in the world.
Following that collection our International Committee took over the job and Chairman Peter Grainger involved our Rotary District for 2007. As a result, over 400 Rotarians arrived on the day to collect equipment. They were also joined by members of other organisations such as Round Table, Masons and Scout groups. Aver 1000 tents were collected plus other equipment such as sleeping bags.
All the equipment was packed and collected by the International Aid Trust for immediate despatch to anywhere in the world.
This is now an ongoing event taking place every August.
